Loading screens in Articulate Presenter #18

Here’s a really simple tip for anyone loading an .flv or .swf file into presenter and is worried about loading times.  It can be the case that a user clicks on a link to a video or .swf file and they are presented with a blank screen while the animation or video loads.  Get round this problem by inserting a simple text box that loads VERY QUICKLY and warns the user that content is loading.  Here’s what to do:

1.       In your presenter file simply create a text box with the text: loading…

2.       Ensure that the loading… text is above any other image objects on your slide.

3.       Place your flv or swf file over the top.

When you preview in Presenter™, or on your local drive you won’t see the benefit.  However, if you try your project remotely – somewhere with a slower internet connection you will see the benefit!

Lesson #7 - Encode twice

Encoding video is a bit of a black art!  Ideally, if you are streaming video over the web aiming for a max file size of 10mb improves the performance of your learning object.  To get a piece of video to this optimum can involve some tweaking.  The first stage is to reduce the bit rate.  This usually does the trick.  However, the downside of this is that videos can be prone to “sticking”.  To get over this try changing the encoding pass setting from ONCE to TWICE.
